Although HFCs (hydrofluorocarbon) have replaced the majority of blowing agents in industrial countries, the Kyoto Protocol identified HFCs as industrial gases requiring emissions control because of their high global warming potential.

Global warming potential (GWP) is the heat absorbed by any greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, as a multiple of the heat that would be absorbed by the same mass of carbon dioxide (CO2). The global warming potential of blowing agents used to manufacture certain products can be an important consideration when assessing a product’s environmental impact.

Kyoto Protocol
The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement that aims to manage and reduce carbon dioxide emissions and greenhouse gases. The Protocol was adopted at a conference in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997 and became international law on February 16, 2005.
