Sure-Seal® Cool Gray EPDM

About Sure-Seal Cool Gray EPDM

Roof membrane color plays a crucial role in a building’s energy performance. In cooling-dominant southern climates, black membranes can increase energy costs, while in heating-dominant northern climates, white membranes can do the same. Carlisle’s new Sure-Seal Cool Gray EPDM bridges this gap by offering a balanced solution for mixed climates. It combines the reflectivity of lighter membranes with the thermal benefits of darker ones, without sacrificing the trusted benefits of EPDM.

What are heating and cooling degree days?

Heating  and  cooling  degree  days  are  metrics  used  to  estimate  the  energy  demand  required  to  heat  or  cool  a  building.  They  are  calculated  based  on  the  difference  between  the  daily  outdoor  temperature  and  a  baseline  indoor  temperature (65° F) typically assumed to be comfortable for most people. Using the accompanying map, it can be determined where black EPDM can be utilized to reduce heating costs, Cool Gray EPDM can be utilized when there are an equal amount of heating and cooling days, and white EPDM can be utilized to reduce air conditioning costs.
