TecTopics: CAV-GRIP PVC Tips
Save on Labor and Material
CAV-GRIP® PVC offers significant savings in both product and labor costs. When comparing sprayable aerosol adhesive material costs to standard bonding adhesive, it is important to keep coverage rates in mind. CAV-GRIP PVC, although it has a higher price per canister, has over twice the coverage rate of Sure-Flex™ PVC Low-VOC Bonding Adhesive and offers a lower material cost per square foot. This makes it the preferred application method even before factoring in the labor savings of up to 60%. Significantly faster adhesive application combined with shorter flash-off times and a complete elimination of product mixing makes CAV-GRIP PVC the clear choice to save time and money.
Prepare for Success
The first step in any successful adhesive application is substrate preparation. All substrates to receive CAV-GRIP PVC should be clean, smooth, dry, and free of any films, sharp edges, foreign materials, oils, or greases. If depressions more than ¼” are found these should be repaired with an appropriate patching material such as epoxy or mortar. Pressure washers, brooms, blowers, or vacuum cleaners may be necessary to achieve the desired result.
Pro Tip: On vertical surfaces with residual asphalt, CAV-GRIP PVC can be used as a “sealing” base coat to reduce the potential for asphaltic bleed-through when using FleeceBACK® membranes.
Guarantee Proper Application
When applying product, it is crucial that proper application is achieved. After preparing the substrate, begin spraying while keeping the spray tip 12” away from the roof surface. Proper gun distance as well as a perpendicular spray pattern helps to eliminate thick and thin adhesive coverage. To further ensure proper coverage remember that spray passes on vertical surfaces should overlap 50% of the last pass and horizontal, field application should overlap 2-3” so that the entire surface is fully covered. Finally, CAV-GRIP PVC flashes off quickly, generally within 5-7 minutes, but has little to no tack. Product should not transfer to a bare knuckle when testing for flash-off.
Pro Tip: To maintain proper spray distance from the substrate consider using the CAV-GRIP Spray Gun with the 24” extension.
